UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

UK ETA travel authorisation

The UK ETA is a digital travel authorisation for travellers eligible for visa-free entry. It is designed to streamline entry processes through pre-travel checks. Applications can be made via the official UK government website or through a mobile app. The fee is GBP 16 (approximately EUR 19). Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries, with each stay permitted for up to six months.

What to Expect:

Eligibility depends on the traveller’s passport nationality. The ETA aims to simplify travel. However, technical issues and delays were expected during its gradual rollout, which began in December 2024 and was completed as of 2 April 2025. The system does not replace manual passport stamping nor guarantee entry to the UK.

Travel

Impact on Travel:

Travellers with passports from eligible visa-free countries must apply for a UK ETA before travelling. Exceptions include British and Irish citizens, holders of British Overseas Territories (BOT) passports, dual citizens, visa holders, those with permission to live, work or study in the UK and residents or travellers from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man.

Advice:

  • Apply for the ETA at least three days before departure.
  • Expect possible delays at passport control.
  • Ensure the passport matches the ETA information; a new or renewed passport requires a new ETA.
  • Travellers with emergency travel documents should postpone travel until a valid passport is held.
  • ETA approvals for families or groups may be issued at different times.
  • A valid passport, email and payment are required; payments are non-refundable for errors.
