Dozens of wildfires erupted across the provinces of Hatay (Antakya), İzmir (Menderes, Çeşme, Buca, Seferihisar, Ödemiş) and Manisa (Akhisar, Ahmetli, Kula, Saruhanlı, Turgutlu) in June and July, fuelled by strong winds and extreme weather. Thousands of people were evacuated, with at least two fatalities, over 46 injuries and nearly 50,000 people displaced. As of 5 July, most of the wildfires have been brought under control through sustained aerial and ground operations. Major disruptions included road closures, evacuations in multiple districts and temporary suspension of operations at İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB/LTBJ).
Strong winds and rising temperatures may cause the possibility of new outbreaks in Hatay, İzmir and Manisa provinces. Wildfires may lead to sudden disruptions such as road closures, traffic congestion and delays or diversions in public transport. These events can also impact airports, ports, railways and communication infrastructure.
What to Expect:
Threats to public safety, including health impacts from smoke, are likely, while critical infrastructure, including electricity and water supply, may be affected. Although wildfires have been largely brought under control in the affected regions, strong winds and rising temperatures may still cause flare-ups and the possibility of new outbreaks.
