Severe floods in Central Vietnam

Central Vietnam floods and landslides

At least 91 people have been killed, injured or gone missing in Central Vietnam, including Da Nang, Hue, Quang Tri, Quang Ngai and Lam Dong provinces, due to floods and landslides from heavy rainfall since 27 October. The situation is further exacerbated by other storms like Typhoon Kalmaegi, which made landfall over northern Gia Lai on 6 November, and Tropical Storm Koto, which hit the same central regions in early December.

What to Expect:

Travel disruptions may continue even after the typhoon as floodwaters recede. Renewed floods and landslides are possible until the monsoon season ends in December. Hundreds of people have been evacuated and further evacuations may occur. Power outages and infrastructure damage persist across Da Nang, Gia Lai, Quang Ngai and Dak Lak provinces.

Travel

Impact on Travel:

Floods have caused congestion and impassable roads across multiple national highways. Flights were suspended at Buon Ma Thuot (BMV/VVBM), Pleiku (PXU/VVPK), Tuy Hoa (TBB/VVTH), Chu Lai (VCL/VVCA) and Phu Cat (UIH/VVPC) airports on 6–7 November. At least nine trains on the Ho Chi Minh City–Hanoi Line were halted due to soil erosion. Further disruptions to road, rail, and ferry services are possible due to continued rainfall.

Advice:

  • Confirm overland routes before travel; avoid crossing floodwaters.
  • Evacuate vehicles to higher ground if water rises.
  • Watch for landslide signs, including soil cracks, bulges, or rumbling sounds.
  • Use flashlights during power outages; turn off appliances to prevent surges.
  • Exercise caution with perishable food; maintain hygiene and water sanitation.
  • Seek medical help for acute diarrhoea symptoms.
  • Protect against mosquito-borne diseases using repellents.
