In Nepal, widespread protests erupted in September 2025 over government corruption and a brief social media ban. Youth activists, particularly Gen Z, led the demonstrations. Clashes between protesters and police were reported in Kathmandu, Bharatpur, Biratnagar and Pokhara. The unrest caused at least 72 deaths and over 1,000 injuries. Travel and services were severely disrupted. Government buildings, media outlets and transport hubs were damaged.
Authorities lifted the social media ban, and Prime Minister KP Oli resigned. Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki took office as PM on 12 September. The situation is gradually stabilising ahead of parliamentary elections on 5 March 2026.
What to Expect:
Travellers should expect major overland travel disruptions on protest days. Protest sites carry a risk of incidental harm. Roads may close, barricades may block routes, and security will be heightened. Public transport could be limited, and fuel shortages may affect services. Travellers should remain cautious as authorities may still impose movement, travel or communication restrictions on short notice at signs of any further mass protest movements.
