Deadly flooding in Texas Hill Country

Texas Hill Country floods

Heavy rainfall and flash flooding affected multiple counties in the Texas Hill Country following ex-Tropical Storm Barry in July. The floods caused at least 145 fatalities and over 1,000 rescues, with severe losses along the Guadalupe River at Camp Mystic, Kerr County, where water levels rose over 10 m (33 ft) in a few hours. A state of emergency was declared. Widespread travel and service disruptions occurred in low-lying areas, including San Antonio and Austin metropolitan regions.

Authorities barred access to multiple rivers, lakes and state parks including Crystal Falls, San Gabriel, Blue Hole, Blanco, Lost Maples and Marble Falls. Dozens of roads were closed due to flood damage. Motorists were warned to avoid all non-essential travel due to the high number of water rescues. In San Angelo, a nightly 20:00-08:00 local time curfew was imposed due to looting until 24 July.
