Exercise caution when travelling to Reunion due to a recent severe Chikungunya outbreak. Travellers should take measures to prevent mosquito bites and ensure vaccine coverage if at risk.
Since early 2025, Reunion has reported 54,532 confirmed cases and 43 deaths, with approximately 174,300 suspected cases. Healthcare facilities have been overwhelmed, particularly in Le Tampon, Saint-Denis and Saint-Paul. The elderly, minors and immunocompromised individuals are most affected. Authorities declared the outbreak over on 27 June.
What to Expect:
Chikungunya spreads via Aedes mosquitoes, which are most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Transmission typically peaks during the rainy season (December-April). Preventive measures include repellents, long clothing and mosquito nets. Imported cases have been reported in Mayotte, Wallis and Futuna and Martinique, with local transmission detected in Mayotte.
Symptoms and Treatment:
Symptoms include high fever, joint pain, headaches, muscle pain, swelling and rash. Most recover in 7–10 days, though severe or chronic cases can occur. There is no specific treatment; symptom relief (e.g., ibuprofen) may be used once dengue is ruled out.
Vaccination:
A vaccination campaign started on 7 April 2025, targeting high-risk adults (18–64) with comorbidities and healthcare workers. Pregnant and immunocompromised individuals are not recommended to receive the live attenuated vaccine.
