Colombian departments threatened by criminal and insurgent activity

Travel risks in Colombia

Criminal and insurgent activity in Colombia has increased, particularly in departments historically affected by the armed conflict, including Norte de Santander, Nariño, Arauca, Antioquia, Cauca, Chocó and Córdoba. Violence by armed groups, such as ex-FARC dissidents, the ELN and the Gaitanista Army of Colombia (EGC), involves kidnappings, bombings, armed clashes and curfews, often impacting both rural and urban areas.

Peace talks and ceasefires have been inconsistent, with some factions resuming hostilities, among them the Ejército de Marquetalia Colombiano (EMC) and Segunda Marquetalia. Incidents in 2024-2025 include deadly attacks in Cauca, Antioquia, Valle del Cauca and other departments, leading to curfews, lockdowns and forced displacements. Travel to affected areas carries heightened risks, particularly in regions with weak state presence or ongoing territorial disputes. Visitors should exercise caution, follow local guidance and avoid areas with known armed activity.

Impact on Travel

Armed strikes and attacks by criminal groups pose a serious risk for travellers. Vehicles, such as ambulances, may be targeted. Prolonged strikes can disrupt fuel, water, transport, businesses and local media. Violence mostly targets military and police, but kidnappings for profit remain a threat. Travel may also be restricted due to military operations.

Advice:

  • Keep a low profile and vary routines.
  • Protect travel details and report suspicious activity.
  • Register with embassies or consulates.
  • Use reputable local guides outside cities.
  • Be cautious around security personnel and areas of armed clashes.
